London Livery Halls
Livery Halls are a unique London phenomena as they are the physical embodiments of the (now ancient) craft associations based there that have fostered the growth of these trades for as long as they have been commercial operations. Today, many of these halls are maintained in their original splendour through revenues derived from tourism and corporate events with their fine examples of Victorian and Georgian architecture and their superb catering facilities.
With over forty Livery Halls in the City of London, their names represent many long-standing trade and craft bodies such as Brewers Hall, Butchers Hall, Coopers Hall and Founders Hall. They vary in size and many have a variety of rooms which are ideal for hosting events for as few as ten to a party or wedding with many hundreds of guests. The common factors with all the Livery Halls, however, are the tradition, history and splendour that cannot be found in modern venues.
Livery Halls are ideal venues for event organisers, meeting bookers, wedding organisers or individuals wanting to arrange a special occasion of any kind. Catering at these venues is usually of the highest standard and meal service often reflects the very traditions that the Livery Halls and their associated trades stand for making them ideal for corporate entertainment or marketing events. Indeed, their closeness to many other London-based organisations – especially financial institutions such as banks and accountancies and also law firms – makes them ideal locations for meetings, conferences and events for such businesses.
High ceilings, marbled floors or deep carpeting and ornate wall decorations epitomise a typical Livery Hall and, as virtually all are in City locations, they are usually terraced, multi-floor buildings which can often command stunning views from their upper floors depending upon their location. Many of these unique buildings also have small exhibitions or museum displays outlining the history and present day activities of the Livery Hall and its associated trade body.
Livery Halls are not found outside London. Whilst trade organisations such as these were established (and continue) in many other cities in countries across Europe and elsewhere, the number and longevity of these organisations in England, and their propensity to have established a physical presence in these buildings to support activities in the City of London, means that Livery Halls are exclusive to the Capital and the ‘square mile’.
